Embark on an awe-inspiring adventure to conquer Denali, the highest peak in North America, standing proudly at 20,310 feet (6,190 m) above sea level. Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, holds the distinction of being the tallest mountain on land when measured from base to peak, boasting a towering height of 18,000 feet (5,500 m). Nestled in the Alaska Range within the interior of Alaska, Denali is the centerpiece of the magnificent Denali National Park and Preserve.
The Koyukon people, indigenous to the region, have long revered the peak as “Denali.” However, in 1896, it gained the name “Mount McKinley” in support of then-presidential candidate William McKinley. This name persisted until 2015 when the U.S. Department of the Interior officially reinstated its original name, Denali.
Denali’s climbing history is rich, marked by the first verifiable ascent on June 7, 1913, by Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, Walter Harper, and Robert Tatum via the South Summit. The West Buttress route, pioneered by Bradford Washburn in 1951, is now the safest and most popular route for contemporary climbers.
